Pilar, like thousands of other Spaniards, left Spain in 1939 to escape Franco's dictatorship. Through its narrative, complemented by archival footage and stop-motion animation sequences, the film revisits the little-known story of "La Retirada" (The Retreat) and France's unwelcoming treatment of the losers of the Spanish Civil War.
